Who cares about birthdays?
My wife, partner, friend and lover,
You know that I believe celebrating dates is just a convention that originate on a distant past, where someone decided that we needed a unit to keep track of the passage of time. It was decided time it takes for the Earth to complete one orbit around the Sun - or for our long gone ancestors, the time the Sun takes to complete one course around the Zodiac - would be it.
So our tools to measure the passage of time are mere conventions - we attribute meaning to it, although there isn't any.
Why do we celebrate Birthdays and anniversaries then?
Most people never asked this question. I did, so whenever the date comes when a friend is celebrating I try to tell them the reason why it's meaningful for me.
We sometimes take things for granted - the things we have, the things we've done and more important than anything, the people that are part of our lives.
Life is a very intense experience. So intense in fact we forget to look around and acknowledge the fact that some people make us smarter, stronger, and happier. More than that, we forget to tell them so.
That's why a birthday is important for me. It's the moment when we force yourselves to stop and give someone something in return for the impact they have on our lives. It's the moment we can tell them how important they are on making of the person who we are now.
But in your case it's different, because I don't care about the number of times the Earth has orbited the Sun or the fact you were born on March 27th.
One date is not enough to celebrate you.
I wish I could do that every day of our lives. To tell you that you make me a better, stronger and happier man - every single day we spend together.
So, my beautiful wife, partner, friend and lover, if I haven't done that enough in the past - and I'm pretty sure I didn't - I'm here to celebrate how wonderful life is while you're in the World. (thanks Sir Elton)
